Es poco probable que en los últimos dos siglos haya existido un autor en lengua alemana tan influyente como Heinrich Heine. No sólo tuvo justa fama como poeta, crítico y ensayista exquisito, sino que el rastro de su pensamiento y su obra puede encontrarse en todas las grandes figuras de la Alemania del siglo XIX: Marx y Engels le citan como un visionario por sus opiniones filosóficas y religiosas. Sigmund Freud y Friedrich Nietzsche acreditan su influencia en sus textos, y Richard Wagner, entre otros, empleó temas heinianos para dos de sus óperas. Es justo decir que Heine, con su ingenio, su agudeza y su fino sentido de la sátira, fue una de las grandes luminarias del Romanticismo y, a pesar de ello, también su verdugo. En este volumen se publican tres de las obras narrativas más ácidas e íntimas de este genio singular.
