The unsustainability of automobile dependence appears sharper than ever while, at the same time, the benefits of cities promoting walking, hence boosting urban life, are increasingly evident. Human life is basically on foot; i.e. , the most fruitful relationship between people with their social environment take place outside cars. The urban realm, traditionally hosting them, can be regarded as the ultimate civic space, the space for social integration. The purpose of this guide is to offer arguments and recommendations for a better consideration of pedestrians in urban design and, specially, in architectural projects. In this way, architecture could contribute to enhance urban trips on foot, as a means to more lively, viable, healthy and accessible cities. Additionally the book provides an overview of illustrative experiences within the context of contemporary professional practice.
